What’s worse is that if you go to your doctor with symptoms of adrenal burnout, chances are they won’t know what’s causing it.

In medical school, they are only taught to look for extreme adrenal malfunction. Either Addison’s Disease, which is when the adrenal glands don’t produce enough of the hormone cortisol, or Cushing’s Syndrome, which is when they make too much cortisol.

And only these extremes are considered abnormal. Everything else is considered “normal.” Yet adrenal burnout happens to 15 percent of people on either end of the testing.

That means your adrenal glands could be working far from normally, but most mainstream doctors won’t even recognize that you have a problem.

The good news is, you can completely reverse adrenal burnout in two easy steps, and have all the energy, enthusiasm and relaxed, confident happiness you were built for.

Step 1) Turn back the clock: In a groundbreaking study, researchers took muscle samples from young adults and older adults. The older group exerted themselves intensely three times per week.

Step 2) Take time out for yourself. Participate in a meditative practice like yoga or tai chi to release any pent up stress and emotions.

These were the tools the ancients used to slow their brain waves and feel a sense of calm and joy.

In fact, simple yoga breathing can help. It’s a technique I learned from a yoga master when I was in India. It balances your adrenal hormones and makes you relax and recuperate.

Before you begin, sit in a comfortable spot, and control your breathing. Concentrate on taking deep breaths, in and out.

1. Empty your lungs until there’s no more air. Exhale completely. Force out every drop.
2. Inhale deeply for at least a slow count of 4. Fill your lungs until you can’t inhale any more.
3. Hold your breath for at least a slow count of 7. Anticipating the exhalation like this creates a calming and rebalancing effect.
4. Now exhale for at least a slow count of 8. Empty your lungs fully, then push out any remaining air. This is the part we usually forget, but it’s the most crucial. As you exhale, you will feel yourself relax.

By adding this exercise to your daily routine you’ll not only boost your immune system, you’ll also effectively deal with problems like stress, anxiety and isolation that cause adrenal burnout.

Salt water is very healthy for your skin. Because salt is a natural exfoliator.

Normally, your skin will have a buildup of dead skin cells that can cause a rough, dull, dry, and aged appearance.

It can even make you look older by accentuating any cracks on your skin’s surface.

2. Buy a Quality Scrub. For these, it’s important to look at the label. To cleanse your skin, it’s best to have as few ingredients as possible.

And remember that even some products labeled “organic” might have ingredients that you don’t necessarily want in your salt scrub. For example, safflower oil and “natural” vitamin E, can be derived from genetically modified sunflower seeds and corn.

Be sure you haven’t just shaved if you’re going to exfoliate with salt. That way you won’t have any nicks or cuts… after all, you don’t want to rub salt on an open wound.

If your skin is sensitive, use salt of the finest grain you can find so it’s less abrasive but still effective.

But I was still surprised to see what my new friends in Bali, Lelir and Westi, had made us for dinner. I expected them to eat like birds, but every single dish on the table was rich, creamy or sweet.

My first bite of bubuh injun had me wondering how in the world the Balinese stay so slim.

I’d just flown halfway around the world to see for myself if what I’d been reading about could possibly be true: Could they eat as much rich food as they want throughout Bali and still stay naturally thin?

I may have found the answer hiding in Lelir and Westi’s everyday routines. It’s a fat-melting flower that’s one of Bali’s best-kept secrets.

And the truth was even better than I imagined.

You see, Bali is a place that doesn’t give up its secrets easily. After centuries of being invaded and conquered by hostile nations, the Balinese have become fiercely protective of their culture.

That might be why so few people know the full story behind one of their most celebrated treasures.

They call it sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). I saw its large, pink petals blooming above the surface of freshwater ponds. A few times I saw peddlers selling its unusual fruit, which grows right in the center of the flower and looks like the spout of a watering can. But most of the time I saw it carved into intricate stone statues outside of Hindu temples.

The sacred lotus accelerates the breakdown of fat, essentially draining it right out of your fat cells.

Westi told me that the sacred lotus represents divine beauty and purity, and has symbolic importance in the Hindu religion, which most Balinese practice.

Although it seemed to be everywhere I went on the island, very few outsiders know what this beautiful flower can really do.

The sacred lotus may hold the key to helping you achieve accelerated fat reduction.

Researchers were able to see this at work in a recent animal study. They found that sacred lotus appears to have slowed down the animals’ natural process of making new fat cells…and signaled for the breakdown of existing fat at the same time.¹

Sacred lotus seems to specifically target fatty tissue. It helped keep the animals from gaining more weight – and many even dropped weight.

Another animal study suggested that sacred lotus interfered with the body’s digestion and absorption of fat and carbs. At the same time, it accelerated the breakdown of fat and helped the body melt it faster.²

These preliminary results are very exciting and I anticipate that human clinical trials will show a similar benefit. The results look very promising in my opinion.

But that was only the first slimming secret I uncovered in Bali. My friends Lelir and Westi had the second one growing right in their own backyard, a treasured spice that shuts down fat cells.

My friend, herbalist Ni Wayan Lelir, shows me the turmeric root she uses in her daily tonic.

I wasn’t surprised when Ni Wayan Lelir (pronounced Nee Why-an Lee-leer) told me, “We don’t like to go to doctors. We don’t need chemicals. We use the herbs surrounding us. Like for immune health, we use turmeric.”

Lelir is a fifth-generation herbalist from a long family tradition of natural healers, called Balians. She learned the art of Jamu medicine from her mother and grandmother, and has spent years developing formulas in her workshop that you can’t get anywhere else. Her husband, named I Made Westi (Eye Mah-dee West-ee), is an agriculturalist and herbalist, and he oversees their incredible herb garden.

But while I was there, I didn’t see one person come in asking for help with their weight. They don’t need to. There’s no sure way to know why this is true, but the speculation is that it’s because of what they eat.

This includes eating powerful roots like the turmeric many of them get every day from Lelir’s “Jamu” formulas (Jamu means herbal healing in Javanese). And they cook with turmeric too.

Westi took me to see the turmeric plants in his garden, growing on a huge plot of land tucked away in the jungle high in the mountains near his home town of Ubud. There were at least 6 different kinds of turmeric there, in rows as far as I could see.

I’d already known about turmeric’s power to support immune health and promote proper inflammatory response. But I suspected there was something else at work in this plant.

Turns out that the active component in turmeric, called curcumin, is also thermogenic – it may help increase metabolic rate! Think of it like turning up the heat in your cells. The temperature goes up and the fat is converted into energy.

Back in my Florida office, I found an eye-opening study from the USDA’s Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

When they gave animals curcumin and a fat-inducing diet for 12 long weeks, the obese mice actually shed weight!³ It seems the curcumin “induced apoptosis of adipocytes.” It caused the death of fat cells.

That’s a lot of calcium.

Even with all that calcium, modern medical doctors and health “experts” will tell you that as a woman, it’s important for you to take a calcium supplement to keep your bones strong and healthy.

But there’s something you should know before you eat another chewable or swallow another capsule.

A study looked at 1,471 women over five years. Half took 1 gram of calcium a day, and half took a placebo.¹

To make sure you retain the calcium you take in, try to get 400 mg a day of magnesium. It works in your bones to balance your calcium.

I’ve used it in my practice to help people lower their blood pressure and boost their immune systems. And traditional Chinese medicine prescribes astragalus as a detoxifier, a cancer-fighter, and includes it in many healing formulas called tonics.

We in the West are not accustomed to the whole idea of “tonics.” Yet in my type of medicine, where I focus on health improvement rather than just disease treatment, I find the history of tonics interesting and useful. Tonics are simply mixes of different herbs and nutrients used to improve your overall health.

Heal Your Whole Body

Most Western doctors believe in treating individual symptoms. Each part of your body has a function, and you treat each part individually. But in Eastern medicine, they believe your body is a balance of many functions, and to stay healthy you need to maintain that balance.

They also believe that organs have psychological and physiological functions. For example, a person who is frustrated or angry would be treated for a liver disorder by traditional Chinese doctors.

The astragalus root was often used in tonics meant to strengthen the heart. Known in China as Huang Qi, or in the West as milk vetch root, it was also used in tonics to treat fatigue. This is probably because astragalus strengthens the immune system.

In fact, in a study on astragalus extract, researchers tested a group of people and measured the number of their white blood cells that looked old, and the number that looked young. After three months of supplementing with astragalus extract, their immune systems acted up to 20 years younger.¹

Astragalus has been a staple of traditional Chinese medicine because they believe it promotes resilience, good health and long life. In fact, the five best-known formulas in Chinese medicine all have astragalus root in them, and are all used to boost what they call “vital life energy.”²

What those early practitioners didn’t know was that astragalus would later help scientists make the biggest breakthrough in the history of anti-aging medicine…

Make Your Immune System Act Younger

These scientists discovered that astragalus has compounds in it that can turn on telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomere length.

Telomeres are the caps on the ends of each strand of your DNA. They get shorter each time your cells divide, and the shorter your telomeres get, the older your cells act. Telomerase is the enzyme your body uses to repair and maintain your telomeres.

Telomerase production is turned off most of the time. But recently, researchers isolated a molecule from a rare form of the astragalus plant that turns telomerase production on, causing your cells to act younger.

Keep in mind, you can’t get this effect just by taking astragalus. You need the unique molecule extracted from among the plant’s over 2,000 other compounds.

But what you can do is strengthen your body’s natural defenses with astragalus. It contains polysaccharides called astragalans that stimulate the creation of new white blood cells, T-cells, killer cells and antibodies. Then these new cells work to activate and restore your immune system. Astragalus also helps your internal organs heal themselves after being damaged from toxins in the environment or disease.

A study conducted in China tested over 1,000 people and found that those taking astragalus had fewer colds. And the people who did get a cold had a much quicker recovery time.³

Another study in Singapore tested 28 people and measured their antibody levels. Fourteen were then given a placebo and 14 were given astragalus. After two weeks, and once more after two months, the participants had their levels measured. The results of the placebo group didn’t change. But, the results of the astragalus group showed a significant increase in the number of antibodies in their systems.⁴

In fact, astragalus is now a widely used element in cancer treatment, either alone or together with chemotherapy and radiation. That’s because high-tech cancer treatments poison the body to stop cancer cells from spreading and to reduce the size of tumors. But they don’t just destroy the cancer cells. These therapies weaken healthy cells, too. That’s where astragalus comes in. Ninety percent of cancer patients who participated in one study showed normal immune response after being treated with astragalus.⁵

Astragalus also increases the production of your body’s anti-tumor agent, interferon. These naturally occurring antibodies found in the body harness the ability to slow (or even stop) the growth of tumors by stopping the reproduction of cancerous cells without damaging healthy ones.⁶

An Italian study showed cancer patients treated with astragalus had the potential to live twice as long as those who received chemotherapy alone. In fact, researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas believe cancer patients who use astragalus will double their chances of survival.

How You Can Use Astragalus

You don’t have to find a traditional Chinese physician to start enjoying the benefits of astragalus. You can do it yourself.

I recommend two to three tablespoons of astragalus root powder daily (about 30-45 grams). You can usually find it already dried and ground at many health-food stores. You can also add the powdered form to various foods and prepared dishes. It has a pleasant, mildly sweet taste.

You may also be able to find the entire astragalus root. You can add it to any dish you simmer for 30 minutes or more, like soups or stews. Before you’re ready to eat, just remove the root.

You can also cook the astragalus root several times because of its unusual density. After this, it softens, and you would customarily eat it with rice.

I like to drink astragalus in a tea. It’s very easy to make. For my special blend, you’ll need:

• A piece of ginger about an inch long
• Four tablespoons of lemon juice
• Four tablespoons of honey
• Two to three slices of astragalus root

To make the tea, first boil one quart of water. Scrape the ginger and astragalus root into a container, then add the remaining components. Pour the boiling water over the ingredients, and cap the container. Let it stand for approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Strain the mixture one cup at a time.

You also can take astragalus as a supplement. Take 500 mg of the concentrated extract three times a day.
